1. Definition of Adverbs

Adverbs are words that describe or modify:
Los adverbios son palabras que describen o modifican

• Verbs: "She runs quickly." (Ella corre rápidamente.)
• Adjectives: "He is very tall." (Él es muy alto.)
• Other adverbs: "She sings quite beautifully." (Ella canta bastante hermosamente.)

2. Types of Adverbs

Adverbs can be classified into several categories based on their function:

a. Adverbs of Manner

Indicate how an action is performed.
Adverbios de manera: indican como una accion es realizada

• "She speaks softly." (Ella habla suavemente.)
• "He drives carefully." (Él conduce con cuidado.)

b. Adverbs of Time

Indicate when an action occurs.
Adverbios de tiempo: indican cuando ocurre una accion

• "I will call you tomorrow." (Te llamaré mañana.)
• "They arrived yesterday." (Ellos llegaron ayer.)

c. Adverbs of Place

Indicate where an action occurs.
Averbios de lugar: indican donde ocurre una accion

• "The cat is hiding outside." (El gato está escondido afuera.)
• "Please sit here." (Por favor, siéntate aquí.)

d. Adverbs of Frequency

Indicate how often an action occurs.
Advervios de frecuencia: indican que tan a menudo ocurre una accion

• "I always eat breakfast." (Siempre desayuno.)
• "She rarely goes to the gym." (Ella rara vez va al gimnasio.)

e. Adverbs of Degree

Indicate the intensity or degree of an adjective or another adverb.
Adverbios de grado: idnican la intensidad o grado de un adjetivo o otro adverbio

• "He is extremely talented." (Él es extremadamente talentoso.)
• "She runs very fast." (Ella corre muy rápido.)

f. Adverbs of Certainty

Indicate the degree of certainty about a statement.
Adverbios de certeza: indican el grado de certeza sobre una declaración

• "He will definitely come to the party." (Él definitivamente vendrá a la fiesta.)
• "She probably forgot her keys." (Ella probablemente olvidó sus llaves.)

3. Formation of Adverbs

Many adverbs are formed by adding "-ly" to an adjective:
Formación de adverbios: muchos adverbios son formados añadiendo "-ly" a un adjetivo

• Quick → Quickly (Rápido → Rápidamente)
• Happy → Happily (Feliz → Felizmente)
• Careful → Carefully (Cuidadoso → Cuidadosamente)

Note: There are exceptions where "-ly" is not added:

• Good → Well (Bueno → Bien)
• Fast (used the same as both adjective and adverb)

4. Position of Adverbs

The position of the adverb in the sentence can vary depending on the type of adverb:
Posiciones de adverbios: la posición de un adverbio en la oración puede variar dependiendo de el tipo de adverbio

a. At the beginning of the sentence

Used to emphasize time or manner.
Al comienzo de la oración: usado para enfatizar tiempo o manera

Example: "Quickly, she finished her homework." (Rápidamente, ella terminó su tarea.)

b. In the middle of the sentence

Generally between the subject and the verb.
En el medio de la oración: generalmente entre el sujeto y el verbo

Example: "He often plays soccer on weekends." (Él juega al fútbol a menudo los fines de semana.)

c. At the end of the sentence

Commonly used with adverbs of place and time.
Al final de la oración: Comunmente usado con los adverbios de lugar y tiempo

Example: "They are waiting outside." (Ellos están esperando afuera.)

5. Common Incorrect Usage

It's important to avoid common errors when using adverbs:
Uso incorrecto común: Es importante evitar errores comunes cuando se usan adverbios

• Don't confuse "good" (adjective) with "well" (adverb).
  No confundir 'good' (adjetivo) con 'well' (adverbio)
  • Correct: "She sings well." (Ella canta bien.)
  • Incorrect: "She sings good." (Ella canta bueno.)


• Don't use two adverbs that modify the same thing.
  No usar dos adverbios que modifican la misma cosa
  • Correct: "He runs very fast." (Él corre muy rápido.)
  • Incorrect: "He runs very quickly fast." (Él corre muy rápidamente rápido.)
